Earth Day was celebrated around the world on April 22, 2026. The event is observed in hundreds of countries to raise awareness about protecting the environment and taking care of the planet, according to Britannica Kids online.

National Geographic Kids online states that Earth Day became official  in 1970. That’s when U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson organized a national day to teach people about environmental issues. Nelson was known for his environmental work and later received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1995.

New Jersey also played an important role in environmental efforts. The website for the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection states that in 1987, New Jersey became the first state to pass a law requiring recycling programs in all 21 counties. The law encouraged people to recycle materials such as paper, glass, and metal. Over time, recycling programs expanded to include plastic containers and electronic waste.

In Emerson, New Jersey, paper, cardboard, bottles, and cans are collected every Thursday for recycling. Recycling helps reduce waste and keeps materials out of oceans and landfills, where they can harm animals and the environment.

“I love Earth Day because it brings awareness for our planet to be protected from the environment and pollution,” Angel L. Cruz, a resident of New York, said. “It is a day to recycle, clean, save water, plant and pick up litter to help save our planet. It is a day to learn about and remember the importance of protecting health and the environment.”

Cruz also explained that he helps the environment by recycling cans and bottles to reduce waste in his neighborhood.
