A new face joined the fifth-grade team at Patrick M. Villano School. Christina Zara has stepped in as the replacement teacher for Christina Rivel, who is currently out on maternity leave. Zara shared that one of her favorite parts about working at Villano so far has been the students.

“My favorite part about working at Villano has been seeing how excited the students are when they see me each day. They make me feel like I truly belong here. The 5th-grade teachers have also been incredibly supportive and helpful as I adjust to a new school at the end of the school year,” Zara said.

She explained that learning the classroom routines has been her biggest challenge.

“The most challenging part has been learning and continuing the routines and systems that Ms. Rivel established throughout the year. The students have been great at helping me remember things like the ticket system and Wheel of Games. They have been very helpful and supportive during this transition!” Zara said.

Zara grew up in Old Tappan and now lives in Hoboken, New Jersey. She attended Rutgers University in New Brunswick, where she studied Business Communications and Political Science. About a year ago, she decided to pursue a career in education and recently passed her teaching exam.

She also shared some fun facts about herself. Zara is an avid marathon runner, can play the guitar, and is a certified mat pilates instructor.

Several students shared their thoughts about having a new teacher in the classroom.

“I think she’s a really kind person, and I think she’s caring as well,” Sophia Anlar said.

Aarna Domadia was in the classroom when Zara taught a sample math lesson. Before being hired, teacher candidates often teach a lesson to students so the school can observe them and students can share feedback.

“I think she’s really nice when I saw her during the sample lesson. She was very kind, and I really liked her,” Aarna Domadia said. “I’m really excited to have a new teacher in the school because I just think it’s a really cool opportunity to have new teachers.”

“I am excited for a new teacher in the school because I can make new opportunities with her,”  Kristi Allen said.

While students are looking forward to getting to know Zara, many also shared that they will miss Rivel. Rivel is expected to return in early 2027.
