When the final school bell rings, the fifth and sixth grade girls on Emerson’s basketball team head straight to the court. Instead of relaxing after a long school day, these athletes spend their afternoons practicing plays, improving skills, and working together as a team.

Angelica Lang, a fifth grader who plays point guard, said she feels confident about her team and believes they have what it takes to succeed.

“I think that we’re going to do pretty good because we have a bunch of tall girls and we could shoot,” she said. “I feel pretty good about my position because I played point guard a lot so I know what to do in the position so I feel good in my position.” she explained.

Lang believes the girls’ strong teamwork will help lead them to a successful season. Another fifth grade player, Ava Finnerty, is also excited about the season ahead. Finnerty enjoys playing both point guard and wing.

“I love my position as point guard and wing,” she said. “I think that my team is great and we have an awesome season ahead.” she shared.

Finnerty said she’s especially excited to begin competing in games and see the team’s hard work pay off. Coach O’Neil Ellis also shared thoughts about the season. Coach Ellis believes the team can accomplish many goals this year because of the players’ positive attitudes and determination.

“Yes, all the players are focused and have a winning mindset,” he said. “We are a young and inexperienced team but have a lot of heart, so we look forward to competing and being present in every game.”
