On April 2, a full moon called a “pink moon” appeared in the sky, according to Almanac online. The Old Farmer’s Almanac is a book and website that has been around for more than 200 years. It shares information about things in nature and everyday life, information like the pink moon. It states that even though it is called the pink moon, the moon is not actually pink.

“The name comes from the early spring bloom of a wildflower native to eastern North America: Phlox subulata, commonly known as creeping phlox or moss phlox. This flower, often called ‘moss pink,’ was in full bloom around April’s Full Moon. Each month has one full moon, and each one has a different name. The April full moon is named after a pink flower in the United States that blooms in early spring,” states the website.

Elizabeth McClafferty, Patrick M. Villano School’s sixth grade science teacher, shared her thoughts about the event.

“I am excited for this. I like any astronomical event, it reminds me that there is a great big universe out there and I’m getting a little peek into what’s happening out there,” McClafferty also said, “I will try my best to go outside and see the full moon that day!”

She shared a fact about the pink moon: “People have been using the Moon to note the passage of time for hundreds of years, long before written calendars. The Pink Moon refers to the first full moon of spring … The Moon will not appear pink in the sky, but we will start to see more pink in nature near this full moon.”

Erin Amicucci, a fifth-grade Math and Science teacher, also shared her reaction.

“To be honest, I didn’t even know that the pink moon was happening this month! But after researching it, I am so intrigued and excited to see it!”

Amicucci said her love of Science has grown now that she teaches the subject. She used to provide push-in support for all subject areas.

“I do plan to go outside and try to catch a glimpse! I have a DSLR camera and would love to try and capture a cool image.”
