Small piles of snow can still be seen on the ground in Emerson, but musical students at Patrick M. Villamo School are already getting ready for the annual spring concert.

“I’m practicing my fingering, so I can play the music more easily in Jazz Band,” said Evin Shelton. Shelton also shared what he enjoys about playing.

“The whole thing is really fun—the notes, the rhythms, the beats … ,” he said.

Shelton is in sixth grade and plays  in Jazz and Symphonic Band. Concert Band is for most fifth graders. Beginner band is for fourth graders and older students who are just starting to play an instrument.

“School band helps me with my piano techniques like fingering and learning chords,” Shelton said.

Fourth grader Lamia Metjahic is in chorus. She said chorus has been easy so far and that she plans to practice her singing a lot. Metjahic said she enjoys learning how to sing new songs.

“School chorus has helped my school life by letting me learn new things and try something I never tried before,” she said.
