Students at Villano School recently had the opportunity to meet award-winning author Katherine Applegate through a virtual event hosted by Bookelicious. During the Zoom session, Applegate discussed her books, shared writing advice, and led students in a creative drawing activity.
According to the Bookelicious website, Katherine Applegate has written many books for children, including The One and Only Ivan, Wishtree, and Crenshaw. She has also authored the Endling series, the Roscoe Riley Rules chapter book series, and the Animorphs series. Applegate is a Newbery Medal-winning and #1 New York Times bestselling author.
Fifth-grade student Frankie Santillo shared her thoughts about the experience.
“It was good, and I liked it a lot. It was really fun and I like that she told us to draw like weird connected animals, and I like listening to the whole interview, “ Santillo said. ” I learned that Kathrine Applegate is a nice person.”
Another fifth-grade student, Molly Lucas, said she enjoyed learning more about Applegate and her books.
“It was really fun, and I loved when we got to draw a special creature made up by ourselves.,” Lucas said. “Through this experience, I learned that Katherine Applegate is a very talented writer who has made many books.”
The virtual visit gave Villano students the chance to learn about the writing process and hear directly from a well-known children’s author.
