Fourth grader Gisselle Asitimbay grips her shiny new flute, ready to tackle a song in beginner band class.
“I am currently playing the flute,” Asitimbay said. “I think the flute is hard but not that hard yet.”
Astimbay plans to practice more and stick with the flute rather than switch intruments next year in beginner band. Joey Gibbs, the band director, said that the fourth graders are progressing very nicely.
“They are mastering their first three notes, and their enthusiasm for band is incredible,” Gibbs explained. “Each student can make a sound on their instrument.”
The most popular instrument in beginner band is the clarinet, according to Gibbs. There are 13 beginner clarinets. All beginner band members play the following songs: “Hot Cross Buns,” “Three Note Adventure,” and “Jingle Bells.”
“I think they are a great choice for a first concert,” Gibbs explained.
The winter concert is on Thursday, December 11, at 7 p.m. and is titled “Snowstorm.”
“It will feature a few holiday songs, but a lot of intense and intimidating pieces as well to channel the ferocity of a snowstorm,” Gibbs said.
