Read Across America Week is a tradition at Patrick M. Villano School where students and teachers spend time reading and celebrating books. During the week, there are special activities that encourage students to read more.

“I like Read Across America [week] because I get to read a lot in school, and I like reading a lot,” Aarna Domadia, a fifth grader said.

Teachers plan the festivities each year. Erin Amicucci, a fifth grade Math and Science teacher, is part of the committee that organizes the week. Being a part of the committee involves weeks of planning, according to Amicucci.

“We have planning meetings, and we have a list of books for everyone to choose from, and we always have a theme every year. This year’s theme is going to be like an underwater sea theme,” she explained.

The committee also planned a Spirit Week. On Monday, the theme was “Shine Bright” in neon and sunglasses. On Tuesday, the theme was “Tacky Tourist”. On Wednesday, the theme was “Life Guard Day”. There was a Luau Beach Day finale on Friday where all students gathered by grade level in the gym. The gym was decorated like a beach.

“My favorite part about Reading Across America week is probably having a unique theme every year and watching how all the students really get into the theme and seeing all the students come together in the gym and reading,” Amicucci said.

Students also enjoy talking about the books they like to read.

“I love Read Across America week because I love reading so much!” Ruth Altman, a fifth-grader, said. “My favorite part about reading is that it transports you to other worlds, it’s just so great! I love reading Warrior Cats, Keeper of the Lost Cities, and Wings of Fire. I just love all fantasy books.”

Read Across America Week brings students and teachers together to spend time reading during the school day.

“I love Read Across America because it is a celebration of reading and it is very good for your mind, so having a whole week to celebrate it is amazing,” Amicucci said.
