Presidents’ Day is a day to celebrate the leaders of the United States such as George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. Nearly 150 years ago, lawmakers set aside February 22 – Washington’s birthday – as a federal holiday, according to Britannica Kids online.
“When I hear something about Presidents Day, I think of presidents, like George Washington because that is George Washington’s birthday,” Riya Shah, a fourth grader, said.
Many schools and federal buildings are closed in honor of the day. Some stores have special sales on this day.
“When I think of Presidents Day I think of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln because those are the most important presidents, in my opinion, and the other presidents don’t really mean much to me … but also when I hear somebody say, ‘Happy Presidents Day’ sometimes I think that it doesn’t mean anything to me. It doesn’t really affect me much because it’s not my favorite holiday,” Giovanni Cevallos, a fifth grader, said.
