The second Sunday of May is not an ordinary day. It’s Mother’s Day. A woman named Anna Jarvis created the idea in 1908, according to Britannica online. Jarvis was from West Virginia. She helped start “Mothers’ Day Work Clubs,” states the History Channel online. These clubs taught women to better care for their children. The clubs united women in the south, an area of the U.S. much divided over the Civil War. In 1914, Mother’s Day became an official holiday in America

“I went out for breakfast with my mom and gave her a gift card,” Nathan Daviou, one grade student said.

Gifts given to mothers are mostly cards and flowers, especially carnations, that are the official flower for mothers day, are the most popular gifts for this day. The Society of American Florists states online that Mother’s Day is the third most profitable holiday for flowers. Valentine’s Day and the winter holidays including Christmas and Hanukkah rank a bit higher.

James Shammas, another sixth grader, followed this trend. He gave his mother ”breakfast in bed with flowers.”
