March 6 is national Oreo Day. It’s celebrated on this date because in 1912, the word Oreo was first used in a trademark form. That means the Oreo is 113 years old this year. Sophia Earle, a student from Emerson, likes Oreos a lot.

“I like the regular Oreo flavor because it tastes good, and it’s a classic,” Earle said. “I really like the Oreo cookies more than the Oreo cream.”

An Oreo is a popular sandwich cookie made by Nabisco. It has two chocolate wafer cookies with a creamy filling in the middle. Today, there are many different kinds of Oreos, including different flavored fillings and cookie types. Some of those kinds include the Golden Oreo with vanilla wafers instead of chocolate, Oreo Thins which has thinner cookies, and Oreo Double Stuff with twice the filling. The company has also made Oreo Peanut Butter Creme, Oreo Birthday Cake, and Oreo Pumpkin Spice.

“I like the mix of cookie and cream and the flavor,” Gianna Albano, another Emerson student, said. “My favorite flavor is the Golden Oreo because I’m not a fan of chocolate that much.”

According to a website called The Sugar Association, a grocery store in Hoboken, New Jersey, first sold the cookies in 1912. Oreo made it into the Guinness Book of World Records in 2011 for being the world’s best selling cookie. Sales of the cookie are well over $500 billion.

The proper way to eat an Oreo has been debated for years.

“Some like to twist the cookie in half, lick the frosting and dunk it in a glass of milk, while others like to break their cookie in half before eating,” continued the Sugar Association online.
