At the Emerson Public Library, it’s after closing time and people have left. Or have they? It’s time for Library After Dark, a new program that includes games, books, movies, and no reason to be quiet. Samanya Panda is already looking forward to the next event.
“I had an AMAZING time with all my friends,” the fifth-grader said. “I think everyone should go to it, but not so many people, because then it would get too crazy.”
There have been two Library After Dark events so far. There was one back in October and this one on January 26, 2024. The Disney movie Haunted Mansion was the main activity.
Victoria Bright, the Head of Children’s Services at the Emerson Public Library, plans the Library After Dark programs.
“I visualize and plan how I want the program will go, pivot if necessary and focus on what is going well, rather than how I thought it should go. Flexibility is key,” Bright explained.
Bright called the first event back in October a “test”. From there, she imagined how it could improve for the next time.
“I’m most looking forward to trying something new!” Bright exclaimed.
Bright sayd plans these events with kids in mind. She knows things can veer off course with kids, and she changes things according to their needs.
“Yes, I am going to the next Library After Dark and I am excited to go because I have never been to one before,” shared Acacia Fang. “I’ve heard a lot of good things about it, and I’m really excited.”
Even though Fang has never been to the Library After Dark she is ecstatic, ready to hang out with new people and make new friends. The next theme will be “Black Light Bingo” where attendees can sport white and neon colored clothes to shine.

It was so fun, and I loved it. Thanks for sharing so more people could go.
