Have you ever wanted to know more about the person who greets everyone in the Main Office at Patrick M. Villano School? It’s time to go behind the scenes with Jackie Santalla, the school secretary, and learn more about her and her position at school.

Santalla arrives at the Main Office each day before 8 a.m. The busiest time of day for Santalla happens soon after she sits down at her desk.

“I would say first thing in the morning as I am trying to do attendance, answering the door, checking in substitutes/visitors and helping teachers and staff with whatever they need,” Santalla explained.

Office responsibilities are non-stop for Santalla, but she does sometimes catch a break in the afternoon.

“The most peaceful times of day fluctuate depending on the day,” Santalla explained. “Mostly it is right after lunch when students are back in their classroom and there are not many visitors coming in.”

April Catuogno, staff member, said the school simply would not survive if not for the hard work and dedication of Santalla. She describes Santalla as the “heartbeat” of the school.

“I don’t think the students truly realize just how much Mrs. Santalla does eah day,” Catuogno said. “She is the center of organization, communication, and calm.”

Catuogno explained that aside from being the first friendly face people see each day, she coordinates schedules for administrators, meetings, and substitute teachers. Santalla also keeps attendance, student files, registrations, and other forms organized. In addition, Santalla distributes mail, orders and manages supplies, and helps with buses and announcements.

“I can’t tell you how many times Mrs. Santalla has helped me by making last-minute copies or completing field trip paperwork,” Catuogno said. “She’s also been instrumental in helping organize The Villano View’s annual evergreen sale. The sale simply would not happen without her.”

Santalla has worked in the Emerson School Districtfro 24 years. She spent the first nine years in the Emerson Junior-Senior High School.

“Prior to that I worked in the publishing industry for 18 years. My favorite job then was Sports Illustrated, where I met many famous athletes,” Santalla said.

In her spare time, Santalla cheers for the New York Mets. She enjoys going to their games at Citifield.
