Louie Burke felt good about the focus of this month’s Family Time at Patrick M. Villano School. Burke said being self-aware will help him be ready for anything life throws his way.

“Self-awareness means to me being aware of what’s around you and being aware of what actions you are doing,” Burke said. “I think self-awareness is very important to learn because if you make someone upset or you are in danger, you know what you did and you can always apologize to the person or run away from that danger.”

Burke, a fifth-grader, calls self-awareness a valuable life skill to learn. His classmate, Layla Robayo, agrees.

“To me self-awareness means that you’re always thinking about what you’re doing and how it affects others, like if it can be negative towards others and you need to kind of decide to do the right thing,” Robayo explained.

Robayo said she uses self-awareness whenever she is stressed. That’s when she is most likely to act annoyed or rude to others.

“I kind of have to think for a second to be aware so that I don’t affect others,” Robayo answered.  “I think self-awareness is very important to learn because you learn how to … make the people in your life more happy.”

Self-awareness is one of many life lessons learned during Family Time. Family Time is a school tradition where small groups of students from all different grade levels meet with a teacher to build relationships and explore social-emotional learning lessons.
