Memorial Day is a national holiday on the last Monday of May each year. It is a solemn day where people honor and mourn the many men and women who served in the U.S. military.

“On Memorial Day weekend, I think a great tradition is to hang out with family and thank all the people who were in the military because they sacrificed  themselves to make the world a better place,” Molly Lucas, a fourth-grader, said.

On Memorial Day, most schools have a day or two off from school. Some people visit cemeteries and place American flags or patriotic flowers by the graves of those who served to show respect. Lilly Lemken, a fifth-grader, has her own family traditions.

“Some things I like to do are … celebrate, have fun with my cousin … have a party.” Lemken said.

Many people, like Lemken and Ella Parodi, a 7th grader from another school, use the long weekend to begin their summer season.

“One of my favorite things to do on Memorial Day is to hang out with family and friends … We go in the pool outside and hang out with cousins,” Parodi said.
