Doctors, lawyers, athletes – all are popular career choices among sixth graders at Patrick M. Villano School. The choices were made known during the traditional end-of-year career project in ELA class with teacher Meagan Pritchard. The idea is to motivate students to envision their life and start thinking about focus areas to study as they enter the Emerson Junior-Senior high school next year.

“I want to be a veterinarian,” Lincoln Bahng said. “I really like animals, and I think it would be a cool job. It also has good pay. My career tests told me I could be a nurse. This is because I am really helpful and caring, but my main interest is to be with animals.”

In the career project, students research facts about their career choice, and organize those facts into a three paragraph essay. The essay explains what education and skills are needed for the career. It also includes the reason for choosing the career. Their final project includes a poster with career images and a vocabulary chart.

“I have been doing this project since I came here in 2022, but this school has been doing it since before I got here,” Pritchard said.

While many career descriptions are interesting, Pritchard has a favorite this year.

“My favorite job this year was Hailey Carcich’s job as a songwriter, which I thought was very interesting,” Pritchard said.
