The Hero Two Doors Down, written by Sharon Robinson, was the April book club book at Patrick M. Villano School. It is about a 9-year-old boy named Stephen Satlow who befriends baseball legend Jackie Robinson after they become neighbors.
“It was a good book because it was heartwarming since Steve met his hero [Jackie Robinson] and they became friends,” sixth-grader Ava Samuels, said. “I decided to read this book because I always read every book club book.”
Jackie and Steve spent a whole year living right next to each other and bonding over baseball and other things in life. Sixth grader Samanya Panda also read the book.
“It was kinda sad in the beginning because Stephen’s dad died, but it got happy at the end when both families celebrated the holidays together,” Panda said.
The Robinsons and the Satlows celebrate the holidays together after Jackie bought Steve a Christmas tree, not realizing they are Jewish.
