The Hunger Games is a thrilling book, the first in a series of three novels, by author Suzanne Collins. It’s about a 16-year-old girl named Katniss who fights to the death in a government-sponsored television show. Originally, her younger sister, Prim, was chosen for The Hunger Games, but Katniss volunteers in Prim’s place. Throughout the book, Katniss’ actions stir a rebellion against her harsh and unfair rulers.

The Hunger Games’ popularity sprouted with some sixth grade readers at Patrick M. Villano School this year. Jayden Lee, a fan of The Hunger Games, enjoyed the first book in the series the most.

“It inspired me to read the other books,” Lee said of The Hunger Games.

Samanya Panda, another The Hunger Games fan, really enjoyed the second book in the series titled Catching Fire, “…because I feel like it is the most detailed, and it left me wanting more,” Panda said. “My favorite part of the book was when the mockingjays started screaming something in Prim’s voice (her sister) and Katniss started going crazy.”

Panda refers to the mockingjay, an important symbol of rebellion in the series. It’s a combination of both a Mockingbird and a Blue Jay. The Mockingjays used to spy for government officials, but the birds failed to do their job.

Each book in the trilogy turned into a movie, as well. Panda has mixed feelings about which she enjoyed more.

“I really like the [first] book because it was my first time reading it, and it really gave me a setting for it,” Panda explained.

Panda said the second movie is her favorite. She said the book was very detailed, and the movie allowed her to really understand and visualise the scenes on screen.
