A fifth-grader walked away the winner of a friendly baseball hitting contest among sixth grade students at Patrick M. Villano School.
“I’m glad to win the trophy,” Caden Castillo said. “I can finally brag to my brother Caden of how proud I am. It is really amazing to be the first 5th grader to do it all.”
Caden Castillo won a previous contest, and he walked in as the first seed in these winter playoffs. He held onto the top spot despite competition from Desmond White, a sixth-grader. It seemed White correctly predicted the tournament’s outcome:
“… my prediction is that Caden [Castillo] will go on a three-peat and take it home. My main attributes to win is my batting and pitching. Having a solid game on both sides can result in me pushing an upset,” White explained.
White started strong with an automatic double and a run to third. Castillo responded with a homer. White upped the stakes with another double, but Castillo pushed to third base. White needed a triple to stay in the game. He hit a ground ball which was scooped up by Castillo for the out and the win.
White earned the title Most Valuable Player and is seeded second in the next contest.
