Did you know Ukulele Day is February 2? It’s a day set aside to honor the small string instrument that looks like a guitar. Norah Smith of Patrick M. Villano School started playing the ukuele at the end of fifth grade.
“It’s really fun and I enjoy it,” Smith said. “I started by learning a few basic chords such as C, F, A minor, and G. I’m learning some harder chords like D and E.”
Smith said she chose the ukulele over a guitar because it has fewer strings, and it’s easier to learn. Her fellow sixth grade friend, Samanya Panda, also enjoys playing.
“I learned ukulele in fifth grade when one of my friends had gotten a certificate for two ukulele lessons with a friend. My friend chose me,” Panda explained.
Ukulele means “leaping flea” in Hawaiian. Three immigrants of Portugal first brought ukulele music to Hawaii in th 1870’s according to Britannica Kids online.
“I’m really glad that Miss [Allison] Beckley teaches it in Music class,” added .Smith.
