The Philadelphia Eagles beat the Kansas City Chiefs 40 – 22 in Super Bowl LIX, and the game had students and staff at Patrick M. Villano School talking. Colton Maus, a football fan in sixth grade, thought the Philadelphia Eagles’ defense would bring them victory.
“Their offense is very good too, but the Eagles defense stands out,” stated Maus. “I thought the Eagles would win 30-27 in overtime with a game-winning field goal. I also didn’t expect the game to be a blowout at all.”
It would have been a three-peat for the Chiefs had they won. There were a couple of standout players on both teams, according to Maus.
“I thought Saquon Barkley would have won the Super Bowl MVP because he’s the best running back in the league, and I thought he would continue to dominate,” Maus added. “I do think Jalen Hurts deserved it though because he had a lot of touchdown passes and running yards.”
Joseph Martinez, the sixth grade Social Studies teacher, shared some background information on his favorite Super Bowl player.
“I would have to say Tom Brady is the best Super Bowl player of all time,” Martinez shared. “He made ten [Super Bowls] as a player and won seven of them. He also won Super Bowl MVP five times. Other players might have had better individual performances, but he led his team there more than any other player has, and usually met the challenge of playing on the sport’s highest stage.”
Martinez said his favorite Super Bowl matchup was between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Arizona Cardinals in 2009. The Steelers defeated the Cardials in a close 27 – 23 game.
“As time expired at the end of the first half, James Harrison intercepted Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner at the goal line and returned it 99 yards for a touchdown. Then, at the end of the game, Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger threw the game winning touchdown in the corner of the end zone to Santonio Holmes. In terms of entertainment, that has to be one of the most exciting super bowls of my life because the two teams kept going back and forth,” Martinez said.
