March Madness is here, and basketball fans at Patrick M. Villano School are ready. That includes Joe Martinez, the 6th grade Social Studies teacher. He’s betting on Florida to win.
“I am rooting for Florida to win because I picked Florida to win in the bracket that I filled.”Martinez stated. “I think that Duke is the best team that is left in March Madness, and they will end up winning the whole thing. I also think that the final four will be Duke against Tennessee and Auburn against Florida.”
March Madness is a nationwide basketball tournament that allows everyone to enjoy their team or the best team in college basketball. There are 64 teams in the tournament.
Nick Benvenuto, a 6th grader from Patrick M. Villano school, enjoys basketball and the festive month of March Madness. He is also rooting for Duke to win.
“I’m watching March Madness because I love basketball, and it’s like a family tradition to watch every year,” Benvenuto explained. “I want Duke to win because I have them in my bracket … Duke has also been my favorite college basketball team for a long time.”
Caden Castillo, a sixth-grade student, is a big basketball fan, as well.
“I am watching March Madness because of all the good gameplay,” Castillo said. “Many games come down to the wire, and others are just blowouts. It is also fun to watch 64 teams battle it out to see who is the best in the country.”
March Madness was invented to give a post-season championship tournament that didn’t rely on sportswriters in New York, according to the NCAA website.
“I want Michigan University to win for many reasons,” Castillo continued. “First of all, they have two players who are 7 feet tall, and both start. It is fun to watch two big guys on the court at once. Also, I have family from Michigan, and I’ve been rooting for Detroit and Michigan teams all my life,” the 6th grader states.
