Even though volleyball is usually a fall sport, it’s making an appearance in Emerson this winter. The first meeting for elementary and middle school girls happened in early January, and many eager players attended. Sixth-grader Olivia Kim is loving her time on the volleyball court.
“I really like hanging out with my friends while I play, and I appreciate all the high schoolers helping out, and it’s just like a fun experience to be at a volleyball clinic,” Kim explained.
The clinic is every Wednesday for the months of January and February. There are two sessions offered: one for fourth, fifth, and sixth graders, and another session for seventh and eighth graders. The clinic is open to any skill level.
“I recommend the volleyball clinic to people who want to play volleyball because you’re allowed to go in fourth to sixth grade, and when you get to seventh, you’re prepared to start right away,” Maia Congiusti, a sixth-grader, stated.
Kelly Wengerter runs the clinic at Memorial School with her dad John Wengerter. They are a coaching team for varsity and JV volleyball at the high school. They also have high school volleyball players volunteering to help out.
“We were told to sign up to work a certain amount of days, but I have been going extra days for fun,” Lea Wohlrab, a ninth grader volunteer, said. “I have fun watching younger girls learn and teaching them as best I can.”
