After school rehearsals are in full swing for this year’s school play: Seussical, Jr. It includes many of Dr. Seuss’s famous book character such as the Cat in the Hat and Horton the Elephant. Sixth grader Norah Smith has a lead role as Gertrude McFuzz.

“I auditioned for and received the Role of Gertrude McFuzz,” Smith said. “I felt like I could connect with the theme of wanting to be noticed.”

Sophia Earle also hoped for the same role, but is happy with her current character.

“I was actually hoping to play Gertrude Mcfuzz, but Myazie La bird was my second option,” Earle said. “Actually, after I got Mayzie I realized that I probably would enjoy playing Mayzie more.”

Both actresses said they faced challenges with their characters but learned how to manage their assigned singing parts.

“This role has some parts that could be considered awkward, but I could get through them if I try,” Smith said. “I like how cool her singing parts are and how they expose me to different things I haven’t done with my voice before.”

Earle agres that playing her part takes practice.

“Some challenges that I think my character has is acting big and bold in a play. [This] definitely isn’t what I’m used to, but I think I could pull it off,” Earle explained.

Rehearsals are once a week after school but they’ll pick up once the curtain prepares to go up in April.

“At the beginning, we just did a table-read. This is where we just read the script as a cast and play the songs just to get accustomed to the play,” Smith said.
