The school was abuzz with spelling bees this month. On January 9, every homeroom from grades four to six had a spelling bee. One winner from each class was invited to partcipate in the school wide spelling bee in a few weeks.

Sixth grader Stefan Dib was the classroom winner representing Meagan Pritchard’s homeroom. His winning word was diablo.

“I like winning, but I don’t really focus on this. I focus more on sports and homework,” Dib said. “This is fun and I’m glad I made it this far.”

Dib said it felt good to win. He also represented his homeroom last year, as well. Other homeroom winners included. Ava Cannata, Caleb Maeng, Jeremiah Mathew, Maya Pineda, Alex Rhee, Leila Donnellon, Liam Martinez, Will Gibbons, James Shammas, Stefan Dib, Natalie Habana, and Juliette Rose Connolly.

Dezi Guillen-Smith, a fellow 6th grader, didn’t win his classroom bee, but gave it a good try. Guillen-Smith said the word that got him out was tricky. It was gargoyle.

“I think something I can do better would be to practice more. I did not practice enough so that’s a reason I didn’t win, so I think I should practice more next time to get better,” he said.

The schoolwide bee is scheduled for January 31. That winner heads to the regioal competition next month.
