Thanksgiving is a time to show gratitude, and many students at Patrick M. Villano School are ready to do just that with family over the long holiday weekend.
“To me Thanksgiving means I get to spend time with my family and be thankful for all the great things in my life,” Alexa Samuels, a sixth grade student, shared.
Grace Nejmeh, a fifth grade student, has a similar thought.
“I’m thankful for my family because they are the people that I love,” Nejmeh said.
Alexandria De la Cruz, a fifth grade student, is looking forward to spending time with relatives, as well.
“I get to see family that I can’t really see that much and get to know them better like talking and playing together,” De la Cruz explained.
The first Thanksgiving was celebrated by Pilgrims. Britannica Kids, an online dictionary, explains that they landed in America in 1620, but half of them didn’t make it through the first hard winter. A group of Wampanoag showed ther Pilgrims how to farm, and after a good growing season, the Pilgrims and the Native Americans had a big meal that lasted three days. Thanksgiving became a national holiday in 1941. It’s always the fourth Thursday in November.
