If you’re looking for a fascinating read, try a Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket with illustrations by Brettt Helequist. It comes highly recommended by two fifth graders at Patrick M. Villano School.
“I feel like I like the series because it is interesting,” Olivia Ellis said.
“I like it too. I also think it is very interesting,” Leah Gawrylo added.
A Series of Unfortunate Events is a 13 book series about three children named the Baudelaurs. They are are orphans who will inherit an enormous fortune when the oldest, Violet, comes of age. The children have to look out for an evil man named Count Olaf who always has a scheme to steal their fortune.
Ellis and Gawrylo have their favorite characters.
“I like Violet because I feel like she’s just a good character,” Gawrylo said. Violet is the kind older sister of the three Baudelaur children. In the series, she is an intelligent inventor at just 14 years old.
“I like Sunny because she is the funniest character,” Ellis said. Sunny is the youngest Baudelaur child at just two-years-old. Sunny loves biting with her two front baby teeth, and she screams a lot since she can’t speak in full sentences yet. Her older siblings understand her shrieks just fine.
Ellis enjoyed the third book in the series the most. In that book called The Wide Window, the Baudelaire’s aunt faked her death.
“I like book eleven because it is funny and some of the things do not make sense,” Gawrylo said. Book #11 is titled The Grim Grotto.
According to one online encyclopedia, author David Handler wrote this series using the name Lemony Snicket. Handler wanted to create books that he would’ve liked to read as a child.
