Spanish is now a new special at Patrick M. Villano School for students, and it’s being taught by a high school teacher. Karla Peña teaches Spanish at the Emerson Junior-Senior High School, and she is a track coach for the girls’ team.
“Spanish is a nice addition to our specials in school, and it’s fun to learn new words,” Joey Ligouri, a fifth-grader, said.
Last year, homeroom teachers spent some time teaching Spanish to their students. Now, students learn in Room 18 which is next to the all-purpose room.
“I like that we could draw in class,” Will Gibbons, another fifth-grader said. “Also, since the classroom has Spanish phrases, it’s easy to learn more words, also.”
There are colorful posters and pictures around the room for students to see during instruction. Duolingo is a big part of the learning, too. Each homeroom has its own Duolingo expectations. Ligouri and Gibbons agree that learning Spanish as a second language is helpful.
