The local 10U AA hockey youth hockey season wrapped up with the a three day tournament called the Shamrock Tournament. Play lasted from March 8 to March 10. The Hackensack Avalanches skated away with the big win. They outscored the Hollydell Hurricanes 6 to 4 in the final game.
“My favorite part of the tournament was when we beat the Hurricanes because they beat us in the playoffs, so it was good to beat them,” Nate Ferry said. Ferry plays for the Hackensack Avalanche. “It felt good, especially because we were down three goals,” Ferry continued.
Ferry channeled his hockey idol, New York Islanders center Mathew Barzal, in the tournament.
“My idol is Mathew Barzel because he’s a good player and he plays for my favorite team. He made the All-Star team and he won the Eastern Conference finals,” Ferry states.
Chris Gutierrez also plays with the Hackensack Avalanche. The win was important for him, as well.
“It felt good to get that win because we didn’t win the playoffs, but we still ended the year on a good note,” Gutierrez said. “One word I would express our tournament is probably effort because I feel the team put in a lot of effort.”
Rory Miller, another Avalanche member, agrees that his favorite moment of the tournament was the final win.
“At first I was nervous because we were down 4-1, but when we won I was very happy, too. I was happy that we beat them because they were the team that kicked us out of the playoffs this season,” Miller said.
Other teams playing in the tournament included the Brooklyn Aviators and Ye Old 2 Street from southern New Jersey.
