This is a special gift sixth-grader Kylie Grompone gave to her mother as a Mother’s Day gift this year.

Mother’s Day is the day people honor motherhood. This year, COVID-19 made celebrating this holiday on Sunday, may 10, a bit different. Haley Karathomas, a fifth-grader at Patrick M. Villano School didn’t let the quarantine stand in the way of showing her mother how much she loves her.

“When I woke up I said, ‘Happy Mother’s Day,’ and I made her a card and got her a cookbook and gardening set,” Karathomas said. “We had breakfast and went uptown to my aunt’s home and kept social distance!”

Karathomas said breakfast was waffles. Fifth-grader Mia Woodward also served breakfast to her mom.

“When we woke up we made her an omelet and bacon breakfast. For dinner, my mom made lasagna, and I made her a picture,” Woodward said.

Mia’s mom, Corinne Woodward, said those homemade gestures mean a lot.

“I loved it when my children gave me gifts and made me a very special breakfast for Mother’s Day,” Corinne Woodward said.

Naomi Shikatani, a fifth-grader, created a homemade card for her mom which included pictures of flowers and her home state of Texas.

“I was very happy when I saw that my children made me muffins and gave me cards,” said June Shikatani.
