Some online research says ocean animals are the most likely to die from litter.

“We won’t have a society if we destroy the environment,” Margaret Mead, an American cultural anthropologist, said.

An anthropologist studies human society. In our society, many people litter, and that litter is hurting our animal population. If you throw a piece of an apple on the ground, an animal may eat it, but if you throw a plastic bag on the ground, that’s trouble. You might think, “It’s only one wrapper. It’s not going to hurt anything.” You are wrong.

“I have seen someone litter before at the park. I just think that littering is very disrespectful to our community,” sixth grader Sofia Guttila said. “I have seen a squirrel eat the litter off the ground. It was very hard to watch.”

Animals might find your garbage, eat it, and die. Some online research shows that one million birds and 100,000 water creatures die each year from eating garbage. The top ten animals that die from litter are all from the ocean.

“Yes, I have seen someone litter before. It was at a park, and I think that littering is bad, and it not only can harm animals, but it can ruin environment,” sixth grader Kayla Mulligan said.
