Third graders from Christina Knaack’s homeroom help load canned goods onto the donation truck. The truck delivers the items to local food pantries.

March Madness at Patrick M. Villano School isn’t a basketball tournament. It’s a food drive for people in our area who can’t afford to buy their own groceries. Student Congress holds the contest each year to see which homeroom collects the most canned goods. Items such as soups, beans, and corn were collected. We spoke with Christina Knaack, a third-grade teacher, whose homeroom collected the most items for the food drive.

Q: How was it like to win?

A: It was very exciting to win. I wasn’t expecting it because my Student Congress representatives made it seem like we didn’t collect enough food.

Q: Students in the winning class were allowed to load the food truck with all the donated items. How did it feel to load the truck?

A: We were all very excited to load the truck. It went really fast because we had a lot of helpers.

Q: What was your class goal?

A :Our original goal was to beat Mrs. Hagemann’s class. [That’s another third-grade class].

Q: What was your class’s reaction?

A: They totally freaked out and couldn’t stop screaming, cheering and jumping.
